Canada Summer Jobs
The Canada Summer Jobs program provides funding to help employers create summer jobs for students. It helps non-profits, small businesses with less than 50 employees, and public-sector employers create positions that meet their needs and give students valuable experience.
Bruce Hyer is pleased to announce that in 2010, 17% more funding has been attracted to the Thunder Bay-Superior North region for the Canada Summer Jobs Program, totalling a record $221,931.
The Program helps fund small business, non-profit and public sector employers create summer jobs for students, with local priorities in mind. The application period is from February 1st to February 26, 2010.
How it WorksProgram objectives are:
- Provide work experiences for students;
- Support organizations, including those that provide important community services; and
- Recognize that local circumstances, community needs and priorities vary widely.
Not-for-profit employers are eligible for funding up to 100% of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage and mandatory employment-related costs. Public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees are eligible for up to 50% of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage.
Applications are assessed using the following criteria:
- Service to local communities;
- Jobs that support local priorities;
- Jobs that provide career-related experience or early work experience;
- A salary that contributes to the student’s income;
- An employer who provides supervision and mentoring;
- Project activities that are directed toward members of, and support the vitality of, an official language minority community; and
- An employer who intends to hire priority students (students with disabilities, Aboriginal students, and students who are members of visible minority groups).
Eligible students are between 15 and 30 years of age, have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year. They must also be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
