My Seniors Bill of Rights will amend the Celebrating Canada’s Seniors Act to establish a yearly mandatory comprehensive review of the living situation of Canadian seniors.
The assessment will include:
- An overview of seniors’ standard of living and quality of life, taking into account income security, pension stability and indexed public income support
- Statistics on seniors’ access to affordable, accessible and secure housing that costs more or less than 30% of their household income
- Statistics on seniors’ access to universal and culturally-sensitive health care, including primary care, dental care, home care, palliative care, long-term care and pharmacare
- An exploration of, and proposals on, how the activities of all levels of government can be harmonized to ensure that the needs of seniors are met in a sustainable and efficient manner.
We must recognize all seniors as valued members of Canadian society, regardless of their socio-economic or cultural status or their state of mental or physical health. We must ensure they are protected from abuse, neglect and exploitation, and that they enjoy freedom, dignity and independence.
